On the tough urban streets of Washington, D.C., 10-year-old Thaniel Battle takes up with a gang who plans to rob a shop owned by Jewish immigrant Eli Zeal . During the robbery, Eli puts up a fight -- and in the ensuing chaos, Thaniel unwittingly shoots him. Thaniel's mother, Tyree, panics and kidnaps Eli, dragging him and Thaniel to her Louisiana hometown, where she rediscovers her Christian roots and introduces both son and hostage to the church.
