Tuba, an Iranian textile worker, tries to raise a family without help from her disabled husband, Mahmoud, who schemes with their eldest son, Abbas, to sell their house to raise money. Their younger son, Ali, is a student activist frequently in trouble with the authorities, while their daughter Hamideh is abused by her husband. Despair rules, but hope and goodness sometimes shine through.
