Asa, recently released from military service, travels to the Kazakh steppes. He moves in with his sister, her husband and their children in a small village in the dry plains. Asa dreams of becoming a shepherd, but first he needs to find a wife. The only woman available is Tulpan, who is initially turned off by the awkward Asa. Their relationship will determine the rest of Asa's life.
