Krishnan is a poor Indian peasant farmer who relentlessly works the fields to scrape together enough money for the meager needs of his wife and young son and himself. One day, unable to properly feed his family on his paltry salary, he decides to steal coconuts from the landowner but is immediately caught in the act and sent to jail. While he's there, the police pin him for the unsolved murder of a constable, leaving his wife to appeal to the Communist Party for help.
