Will a pair of terrible, intertwined secrets tear apart the marriage of Charles and Hélène Desvallées, or will it rekindle their love? When Charles hires a detective to find out whether his wife is having an affair, it leads him from Versailles to Paris, to the home of a writer, whom Charles kills out of rage. After her lover vanishes, Hélène never mentions anything of the relationship to her husband -- but soon, she finds evidence of what Charles has done.
