During the Napoleonic Wars, French soldier Anatole de Keroual finds himself captive in a Scottish jail. When a ruckus breaks out in the crowded dungeon, Anatole is forced to kill another prisoner in self-defense. As British jailer Maj. Edward Chevenish -- Anatole's rival for the affections of beautiful maiden Floria Gilchrist -- tries to nail Anatole on a murder rap, the Frenchman escapes to London. But Chevenish is on his tail.
