Desperate to escape poverty, villager Dionosio Pinzón restores an injured rooster to health. He then starts pitting it in cockfights, where the bird proves to be a fierce competitor. As the money begins rolling in, Dionosio abandons his humble roots and cultivates the trappings of wealth. Along the way he gets on the bad side of gambler Lorenzo Benavides after stealing his girlfriend, La Caponera .
