In this adaptation of a Nikolai Gogol short story, Akaki Akakiyevich labors at a mundane civil service job, lusting after a new overcoat to help him put a stop to his neighbors' constant mocking. When his superiors give him a bonus, he buys the coat of his dreams, fashioned by the drunken tailor, Petrovich . His social status is instantly elevated. But then his beloved coat is stolen, and he goes on a search for redemption and revenge.
