Nickie, a small-time criminal, lives with his father, Buck, a ruthless gangster. One day Buck reveals that Nickie's birth mother is actually Mrs. Bancroft, the wife of the governor, and that he intends to blackmail her by revealing Nickie's existence. Nickie protects the mother he has never known by killing the only father he has ever had. Eventually, he is arrested and sentenced to hang, and only a word from the governor can save him.
