Paul, a doting grandson, looks back on the life of his grandfather in pre-World War II Germany, where the veteran performer is employed as a ''movie teller,'' a narrator of silent films who incorporates violin playing into his narration. Paul's grandfather is proud of his artistic job but becomes distressed when sound movies -- or ''talkies''-- threaten his line of work. Meanwhile, storm clouds are gathering on a national level with Nazism on the rise.
