When stockbroker Charles Strickland abruptly abandons his wife and family, his friend, writer Geoffrey Wolfe, tracks him to Paris. There Strickland pursues his lifelong ambition of becoming a painter and refuses contact with his family. A decade later, Geoffrey visits Dutch artist Dirk Strove, who befriends Strickland, only to see his wife run off with him. As Strickland's fame and egotistical reputation spreads, Geoffrey decides to chronicle his life.
