In Portugal in 1917, young Lúcia dos Santos and her two young cousins witness a vision of a beautiful lady, who asks them to return to the same spot on the same day for the next six months. The children confide what they've seen to kindly peddler Hugo da Silva, who advises them to remain silent. But Lucia tells her parents, and soon the entire village knows about the vision and awaits it. Authorities, however, demand that the children recant.
