In this film adaptation of a Channing Pollock play, Pauli Arndt marries Carl Behrend, who is soon called off to fight in World War I. Life is difficult on the home front in his absence -- Pauli soon finds that she's pregnant, and her pacifist father loses his job due to his beliefs. As the family descends into poverty, Pauli becomes a prostitute to keep her child alive, while her husband is nowhere to be found on the front lines.
