After serving a harsh sentence in a women's prison, Diane Stuart steps off a train at Union Station in Los Angeles -- and into life on the outside. She is greeted by her parole officer, Joan Wilburn, a strict but compassionate woman with high expectations for her mentee. Stuart struggles to adjust to her new life and nurture her own self-discipline in spite of continued poverty and the bad example set by her friend and fellow parolee, Tilly Thompson .
