Residents of a provincial village on the outskirts of Athens, Greece, in the early 1970s, start to feel the strain of change as war and militarism reverberate through the country. But for many of the children of the village, including young Aaron, the summer is still relatively carefree. His innocence is shattered, however, when another local boy falls into a cistern and dies, and Aaron's father, Vangelis, must go off to war.
