A quietly austere documentary from Peter Schoendorffer, a veteran of the First Indochina War between France and Vietnam, returns the filmmaker to Vietnam in 1966, where he and a cameraman are embedded with a 33-man platoon from the 1st Air Cavalry Division, led by Lieutenant Joseph Anderson. Schoendorffer juggles his focus between the American soldiers and their adjustment to the foreign land they've invaded, and the day-to-day realities of war against their unseen enemies.
