In 1936, Mary Lavelle leaves Ireland for Spain to become a governess for a year before marrying. Her employer, Dr. Vincente Areavaga, is a former poet who sympathizes with the forces fighting against Fascist dictator Franco. His son, Francisco, has been fired from his government job for associating with the rebels. Despite his being married, Mary finds herself drawn to the charismatic Francisco and his cause.
