Sent to live with his rather dull grandmother for summer vacation, young Max meets a charismatic gypsy girl called Swing, who introduces him to her culture and the music that so thoroughly permeates it. The illiterate but brilliant guitarist Miraldo agrees to teach Max if in return he helps him compose a letter to the French government. Max's appreciation for gypsy culture deepens as his friendship with Swing grows.
