Times are tough for Kozo and his family, who suffer through a meager existence in a small Japanese village where, for years, there has been little work. Already cramped in tight living quarters with a number of relatives, including his wife, daughter and mother, Kozo tries, but fails, to ignite the town's dire economic situation. Without a job, Kozo slips into depression, and through the years his malaise has a disastrous effect on the family.
