In the France during the 1860s, nobleman and engineer Ferdinand de Lesseps becomes a rival of President Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte for the hand of beautiful Countess Eugenie de Montijo . Exiled to Egypt by the Gallic premier, he falls in love with the French-Egyptian Toni and hits upon the idea of a waterway linking Europe and Asia: the Suez Canal. Despite opposition from Bonaparte and the natives, de Lesseps begins work on the project.
