Apprenticed to the blacksmith Bendet at age 15, Yankel grows up a heartless womanizer. Despite his attraction to Rivke, a flirtatious young wife who's unhappy with her husband, Raffuel, Yankel grows interested in modest Tamara and marries her, promising to become a better man. Yankel's determination to settle down is shaken when Rivke divorces her husband and comes to steal him away from Tamara.
