Paris Trout, a cruel man who abuses his wife, Hanna, also runs a store where he lends out money. When he goes to collect on a loan, Paris instead shoots two innocent black townspeople, a woman and her 12-year-old daughter. After the girl dies, Paris is arrested and put on trial, although he believes he has done nothing wrong. Harry Seagraves, Paris' lawyer, must defend him even as he despises what Paris has done.
