Ten-year-old orphan Thuy runs away to Saigon, Vietnam to escape the bamboo factory run by her strict uncle, who steals the little money she makes. As she tries to survive on the street, Thuy meets Lan, a beautiful stewardess stuck in an unhappy affair with a married pilot, and Hai, a brokenhearted zookeeper of modest means. As the trio slowly forms a sort of family, young Thuy plays matchmaker to the lovelorn adults.
