By the 1790s, Napoleon Bonaparte has risen from the ranks of the battlefield and crowned himself emperor. After earning victories all over the continent, Napoleon returns to France and takes a wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais . Since she can bear him no children, he indulges in a string of affairs. With advisers Charles Talleyrand and Joseph Fouché at his side, Napoleon makes plans to conquer all of Europe.
