In 17th-century England, farmer John Ridd refuses to seek revenge on the notorious Doone outlaw family who murdered his father. Instead, he assumes management of the family farm and looks after his mother and sisters. One day he meets Lorna Doone, the granddaughter of patriarch Ensor Doone . Discovering that Lorna is being forced to marry Ensor's heir, Carver, John brings her to the farm, to the dismay of both his family and Carver.
