Vera lives with her mother and drunken father in a high-rise tenement that resembles a prison. She's doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, but has little faith in the decaying socialist system. She turns to alcohol, drugs and dancing. A tryst with a handsome student, Sergei, promises a way out, but it too leaves her trapped. When the time comes to choose between Sergei and her family, Vera is unsure if either is a good option.
