In the Cajun town of Little Chenier, La., a bait business on the bayou provides a hardscrabble living for Beaux Dupuis and his mentally disabled brother, Pemon . Beaux is still close with his old girlfriend, Marie-Louise, who is now married to Carl LeBauve, the local deputy. When Carl becomes sheriff, he uses his newfound power to exact revenge on Beaux by going after the innocent and naive Pemon.
