Marty is a 10-year-old boy who is stricken with cancer. The hospital staff adores him, and so they allow him to wander around when he becomes bored. During such an exploration, he stumbles upon the room of Antoine Berrant, an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer's disease, which has paralyzed him and rendered him mute. Antoine is very lonely, and the boy's vivacious presence brings him great joy. The two become friends despite the decades between them.
