Mathilde, a surprisingly assertive 10-year-old, insists to her grandfather, Paul, that they find his ex-wife, Madeleine, who ran off years ago. With only the letters that Madeleine wrote to her daughter and granddaughter to use as clues, they journey from Paris to Spain in search of her. Meanwhile, when Mathilde's mother, Helene, who's spent her whole life hating Madeleine, discovers what they're up to, she joins in on the hunt.
