Maria, a Christian mystic, travels across the vast Brazilian landscape, inspiring peasant women and drawing attention to the social inequality endemic to the region. During her journey, she meets Antero, a prophet who has apocalyptic dreams and visions. The two share a belief in a creature called the Dragon, which feeds on the misery of the poor. They join forces to battle the beast and encourage the people to rise up against oppression.
