Constance reads a novel about a woman named Marie who reads to others for a living. In Constance's mind, she then turns into Marie, and suddenly has a host of clients. They include Eric, an accident victim who wishes to hear poetry; a widow with a thirst for politics; and a work-obsessed man who wants to be aroused by erotica. As the reading of beloved and infamous texts goes on, reality and fantasy blend for Constance and her patrons.
