In Japan, in the early years of the 20th century, a tragic tale unfolds in flashbacks. Nobuchi is still deeply troubled by the years-ago suicide of his closest friend, Kaji, which occurred after Nobuchi impulsively proposed to Shizu, the girl Kaji loved. In penance, Nobuchi follows Kaji's interrupted path to spiritual contemplation, but when young student Hioki adopts him as his master, Nobuchi is reminded of his betrayal.
