Charismatic black boxer Jack Johnson wins the heavyweight championship in 1908. Two years later, he cements his status by defeating former champion James J. Jeffries, a white fighter who believed the title to be his race's birthright. This documentary focuses on these and other achievements, and on the racial climate in which Johnson labored. In 1912, at a time when he is among the most famous athletes in the world, Johnson is arrested for daring to associate with white women.
