Carl Akerblom has been committed to a mental hospital for trying to kill his fiancée, Pauline . Upon his release, Carl, Pauline and another patient, Osvald, decide to make a ''talking silent film'' based on the final years of composer Franz Schubert. The movie's premiere is nearly a disaster, but Carl perseveres in his artistic vision and tries to maintain sanity, even as his mental disorder causes terrible difficulties.
