Stanley Snodgrass, a talentless aspiring song-and-dance man, gets canned from his gig in the chorus of a New Jersey-based vaudeville show, a vehicle for starlet Irene Bailey . But when a crazed fan, determined to kill anyone cast opposite Irene, attacks her latest co-star, Irene's boyfriend, Harry, casts the bumbling Snodgrass in the leading man's place. Stanley can't believe his luck -- until he finds out about the knife-wielding killer.
