In Denver before the outbreak of the Civil War, North Carolina native Owen Pentecost tricks saloon owner Jumbo Means into losing everything he owns -- including some valuable mining claims -- in a card game. As headstrong dressmaker Ann and bartender Boston spar over Owen's affections, his fellow Southerners begin assembling their gold to fund the Confederate Army, as the town's Northerners form their own militia and prepare for war.
