A wily thief, Margita goes on the lam after her cohort in crime, her sister Evija, botches a job. Margita hides out in a village up north and tries to not call attention to her misfit ways. But the town is filled with oddballs, including Adolf; his dentist brother, Lepik; Adolf's policeman son, Arnold; and an orphan boy who charms Margita with his pickpocket skills. But is the straight life really what Margita wants?
