As their country is at war with Iraq, Gilaneh and her daughter, Maygol, travel across Iran in an attempt to find pregnant Maygol's husband. Years later, in 2003, as America is at war with Iraq, Gilaneh is at home in Iran, dealing with lingering problems from the Iran-Iraq war. Her son, Ismaeel, a veteran of the earlier war, has a battle-related illness, and Gilaneh anticipates the arrival of a widow who might help care for him.
