Freed after serving time for robbery and murder, Arlene Holsclaw meets resistance when she decides to raise the son she had in prison. Arlene's mother, who sent the boy to live with a foster family, doesn't think her daughter is a suitable parent, and state authorities seem to agree. Along with these challenges, Arlene must contend with the child's father, her abusive ex-boyfriend, Carl, as she tries to stay out of trouble.
