Although ethnically Romanian with family roots in Transylvania, Apostol Bologa is raised within the confines of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is taught his own history from the Hungarian perspective while growing up. While serving in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, he meets Czech officer Klapka, whose proud nationalism reawakens Bologa's own ethnic pride while he's serving on a military tribunal against one of his countrymen.
