The tomboyish Taylor lives with her single mother and their gay male roommate in working-class Milwaukee. On the verge of adolescence, Taylor is uncertain about the world of adult sexuality and gender roles. Experimental filmmaker Sadie Benning partially shot the film with a 1980s toy camera that gives her images a deliberately stylized look that's further enhanced by the cartoon-like paper masks the characters wear at all times.
