In 1989, a woman named Louise finds the diary of radical Jewish poet Alfred Katz, who disappeared mysteriously in 1938. Determined to know the truth, Louise seeks the aid of a knowledgeable professor. In a flashback, Katz -- a supporter of Leon Trotsky -- falls for Mila, a prostitute who marries him instead of her lover, Felix, a Joseph Stalin supporter. But, in a charged political climate, Katz's bliss may be short-lived.
