When Jim Mallory returns to his Texas home after serving in the Civil War, he is shocked to find that his father, Col. Mallory, has started a militia that refuses to adhere to the government's rulings on land ownership, essentially forming its own republic. Jim and his friend ''Happy'' Snodgrass rescue newspaperman Jonathan Taylor from the colonel's thugs and, joined by Taylor's daughter, begin to fight back.
