When her husband is forced into hiding near the beginning of World War II, Hungarian housewife Kata must pretend to be married to János . The two strangers, thrust together to hide their true identities from the Nazi occupiers, have no confidence in each other, and each fears the other will somehow expose long-held secrets. But their sparring hides a growing deeper attraction that threatens Kata's relationship with her real husband.
