Lauded French screenwriter and director Claude Sautet is profiled in this film, which focuses on art, inspiration and mortality. Sautet's movies often dealt with the concerns of France's middle class, and this documentary uses clips from his productions and commentary from his peers to illustrate his creative process. But the heart of the picture comes from Sautet himself, who discussed his career at length in a series of filmed interviews in advance of his death from cancer in 2000.
