After winning a contest to go to Hollywood, Calif., Canadian actress Wanda Gale falls for the promises of con man Smoothie and his partner, Limey . Concocting a story that Wanda is the daughter of a British lord, impersonated by Limey, Smoothie gets Wanda noticed by cynical, drunken director Hal Reed . After Smoothie and Limey blackmail Hal, he romances Wanda and makes her a star in his films -- prompting unexpected jealousy in Smoothie.
