While fighting in World War II, Alistair was responsible for bombing a small town in Germany. It was an accident, but nevertheless, he has felt lingering guilt over what happened. Decades later, the 83-year-old Alistair decides to finally make amends, going so far as to plan a trip abroad. Since he needs help driving around Germany, he enlists his son, Ross, an unemployed art school graduate whom he is estranged from, leading to arguments and unexpected bonding.
