In the midst of the economic boom of the 1920s, the Democratic Party machine picks irresponsible state senator Jimmy Walker as its candidate for mayor of New York City. Elected by a huge margin, the charming Walker bites the hand that feeds him by threatening to root out government corruption. Meanwhile, the love triangle between Jimmy; his estranged wife, Allie; and his Broadway-star girlfriend, Betty Compton, threatens to topple his administration.
