In this film adaptation of the opera, set in 13th-century Hungary, Otto, the brother of Endre the Second, intends to seduce Melinda, the wife of viceroy Bánk Bán . Bánk is loyal to the ruling regime, so when his brother, Petur, organizes a rebellion against Endre, Bánk wants no part of it. However, when Bánk is informed of Otto's lascivious plans, he decides to join his brother's revolution.
