When she is a baby, Avril is abandoned by her parents and left to grow up in a convent. Under the care of Sister Bernadette, a stern but sympathetic nun, Avril lives a strictly regimented life and aspires to become a nun. Before she is leaves on a weekend of silent prayer, Sister Bernadette suggests Avril spend some time away from the convent and explore the outside world. Avril is reluctant to leave, until she learns she has a brother .
